We’ve put a great deal of care and attention into making ’t Knusse Bakhuus a warm and welcoming place where you can genuinely relax. In this Welcome Guide, you’ll find useful information and helpful tips for your stay.

Important information for the ambulance service:
Please let the emergency operator know that the property is in the countryside near Laren (Gelderland) and that Markelo is closer than Zutphen. This helps the dispatcher send the most appropriate ambulance.

Fire or smoke

• Call 112 immediately in the event of a fire.
• Leave the property immediately if there is heavy smoke or fire.
• A fire extinguisher (next to the radiator, to the right of the staircase) and a fire blanket (in the top drawer underneath the sink) are available in the cottage.
• Every room is fitted with a smoke detector.
• Never use water to extinguish fires involving electrical equipment or burning oil or grease.
• If it is safe to do so, close doors behind you to help contain smoke and fire.

Relax in the jacuzzi

The jacuzzi is all set. Time to relax and unwind!

Directions

From ’t Knusse Bakhuus, walk straight ahead, go behind the shed, then turn left and follow the path. On the way, you’ll walk beneath my favourite tree in the garden: the corkscrew willow. Behind the “wall” of ivy, you’ll find the jacuzzi.

Tip: There’s a bench behind the shed in a peaceful spot. Especially in spring and autumn, when you have an open view across the fields, we think it’s one of the loveliest places in the garden. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea as the sun begins to set.

Getting the jacuzzi ready

Start by opening the cover. Release the two clips on the side facing the fruit trees by pressing them together. The two clips on the ivy side can stay fastened. Next, fold the cover in half, then push it all the way back until it can’t go any further.

Set the mood

Hang your bathrobe or towel on the hook attached to the black post with the string lights.

Before you step in, choose the atmosphere you’d like to create.

• Switch on the string lights by the ivy for a warm, romantic setting around the jacuzzi. The switch is mounted on the smaller wooden post, just to the right of the tall black post.
• Or use the built-in jacuzzi lighting by pressing the light button. You can use it to switch between different colours and lighting modes.

Tip: If the sky is clear and you’d like to enjoy the stars at their best, leave the lights off.

Step in slowly

Check the water temperature before you get in. Most people find around 38°C just right. Step into the jacuzzi slowly. It may feel a little hot at first, so give your body a moment to adjust.

Turn on the bubbles
The jacuzzi has three buttons to control the jets:

• One button for the jets on the left-hand side
• One button for the jets on the right-hand side
• One button for extra bubbles throughout the entire jacuzzi

You can choose which jets you want to use and how many you switch on. There’s no need to use them all at once.

The rotary controls around the Jacuzzi let you adjust the strength of the jets, so you can make them stronger or gentler, just the way you like.

Sit back and relax

Lean back and let the warmth do the rest.

A few things to keep in mind 

Please don’t eat in the jacuzzi, as food can clog the filters.

The jacuzzi isn’t a bath 😉, so please don’t add soap, shampoo or bath foam, and make sure you’re clean before getting in.

Fancy a drink? Feel free to use the plastic glasses provided.

Please don’t use glassware in or around the jacuzzi.

Afterwards

Please switch off the jets and the light, then place the cover back on the jacuzzi. This helps keep the water clean and warm for the next time you use it.

Time to relax completely. Exactly as a stay at ’t Knusse Bakhuus is meant to be.

Projector instead of a TV

Instead of a television, ’t Knusse Bakhuus has a projector with Google TV. To us, settling down with a good film or series is all part of switching off and relaxing.

The projector works perfectly well during the day, although the picture looks best when the room is a little darker. That’s why the curtains downstairs are blackout curtains.

Below you’ll find the key instructions for easy use during your stay.

Turning on the projector

1. Pick up the remote control.
2. Press the power button at the top of the remote.
3. The projector will start up. This may take a few moments.
4. The picture and focus will be adjusted automatically.

Using apps

The easiest way to use the projector is by connecting your phone.

First, make sure your phone is connected to the ’t Knusse Bakhuus (gast) Wi-Fi network. Then open your preferred app and tap the Chromecast icon. Select Beamer woonkamer.

The app will automatically appear on the projector screen.

You can now stream your favourite films, series or music directly from your phone.

Google TV gives you easy access to apps such as:

• Netflix
• YouTube
• Disney+
• Videoland
• Spotify

Use the arrow buttons on the remote control to navigate through Google TV and press OK to confirm.

You can use any app that you have a subscription for. NPO Start is the only app that doesn’t require an account.

If you sign in to your own account, please remember to sign out before you leave.

Volume

Use the volume buttons on the remote control.

To help keep the surroundings peaceful, we kindly ask you to keep the volume down between 10:00 pm and 8:00 am.

Finished watching?

1. Press the power button again.
2. If prompted, select Power off.
3. The fan may continue running for a short while the projector cools down. This is completely normal.

Good to know

• The projector displays directly onto the wall, so please make sure nothing is placed in front of the image.
• Please avoid looking directly into the projector’s light.
• The projector has already been set up for the best viewing experience. We’d appreciate it if you could leave the settings as they are.

A classic movie night – DVD player

Besides streaming with the projector, you can also enjoy a DVD at ’t Knusse Bakhuus. In the living area, you’ll find a compact DVD player that’s already connected to the projector. On the shelves next to the staircase, you’ll find a small collection of classic films and TV series to enjoy during your stay. Sometimes, a classic movie night is exactly what you need. 😊

Below you’ll find the key instructions for easy use.

Turning on the DVD player

1. First, switch on the projector using the BenQ remote control.
2. Then pick up the DVD player remote control.
3. Press the power button at the top of the remote.
4. The DVD player will now switch on.

Playing a DVD

1. Press the Open/Close button to open the disc tray.
2. Place the DVD in the tray with the label facing up.
3. Close the tray by pressing the same button again.
4. The DVD will usually start playing automatically.

Use the projector remote to adjust the volume.

Finished watching?

1. Press Stop on the DVD player remote.

Good to know

• Everything is already connected and ready to use.
• No picture? Simply check that the projector is set to the correct source.
• Please keep the volume down between 10:00 pm and 8:00 am out of consideration for our neighbours.
• The projector has already been set up for the best viewing experience, so we’d appreciate it if you could leave the settings as they are.

Daylight or blackout?

Thanks to the four roof windows, ’t Knusse Bakhuus is filled with natural daylight. If you’d prefer a darker room or would like to darken the bedroom, all roof windows are fitted with blackout blinds.

In the bedroom

The two roof windows in the bedroom are fitted with manually operated blackout blinds.

To close the blind

• Hold the bottom rail in the middle or with both hands.
• Tilt it slightly inwards.
• Pull the blind down to the desired position.

To open the blind

• Tilt the bottom rail slightly inwards.
• Gently push the blind upwards.
• Release the bottom rail once the blind reaches the desired position.

In the living area

As the roof windows in the living area are out of reach, they are fitted with electric blackout blinds.

You’ll find the white remote control on the top shelf next to the staircase, beside the first aid kit.

Using the remote control, you can operate both blinds at the same time or control each blind individually.

Fancy a hot drink?

Im ’t Knusse Bakhuus könnt ihr verschiedene Kaffee- und Teespezialitäten At ’t Knusse Bakhuus, you can enjoy a selection of coffee and tea – perfect for a relaxing start to the day or simply taking a moment for yourself.

You’ll find the kettle on the kitchen countertop and the tea box on the shelf above it. A Dolce Gusto coffee machine is available on the small sideboard. Coffee pods are available in a variety of flavours and can be purchased at most supermarkets.

We’ve already provided a selection of pods for you to enjoy during your stay. You can choose from:

• Grande (regular coffee)
• Cappuccino
• Espresso

You’ll find the coffee pods in the drawer of the sideboard, along with coffee creamer, sugar and sweetener.

How to use the coffee machine

1. Fill the water tank at the back with fresh water.
2. Place a cup under the coffee outlet.
3. Turn on the machine by opening and closing the top handle. To do this, lift the slim black handle in the centre on top of the machine until it clicks open, then close it again.
4. Wait until the indicator light stays on continuously. The machine is now heated up and ready to use.
5. Open the handle again and pull out the pod holder. Insert a coffee pod.
6. Slide the pod holder back into place and push the handle down to close the machine.
7. Use the touchscreen to select the desired amount of water. Each pod indicates the recommended amount with a series of bars.
8. Select:
9. red for hot drinks
10. blue for cold drinks
11. The machine will stop automatically once your drink is ready.

Good to know

• Cappuccinos and some speciality coffees require two pods.
• Only fill the water tank with water. Never with milk.
• The machine may remain warm for a short while after use.

After use

• Remove the used pod from the holder and dispose of it. The pods can be placed in the plastic waste.
• You can either switch the machine off or let it switch off automatically.
• At the end of the day, would you mind emptying the water tank? Thank you! 😊

Exploring the area from ’t Knusse Bakhuus

Whether you’re in the mood for a scenic walk, a cosy terrace, a special day out or a relaxed evening meal, there’s plenty to discover around ’t Knusse Bakhuus. Here are some of our favourite places that we think are well worth a visit.

Local favourites & regional produce

Soft serve ice cream at the Kapper family farm
For a delicious soft serve ice cream, you won’t have to go far. Just a 700-metre walk away, you’ll find a self-service soft serve machine at Familie Kapper (Koebushorst 5A/B), serving fresh soft serve ice cream. It’s the perfect treat after a warm summer’s day, or simply whenever you feel like a little indulgence during your stay.

You can also often buy homemade jam or beef from the farm’s own cows. The farm shop is unattended, and you can pay by cash, debit card or QR-code.

Tip: Ever wanted to visit a real Dutch farm? Familie Kapper offers a 30-minute guided farm tour. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the farm before finishing with a delicious soft serve ice cream. 😊

Farm shop De Patrijs
Looking for fresh local produce? Burgerboerderij De Patrijs offers fresh dairy products, cheese, meat, eggs and many other products from their own farm and neighbouring local farms.

Take a stroll around the farm, enjoy a coffee or an ice cream, and discover how farming and nature go hand in hand here. It’s a wonderful place to experience the flavours of the Achterhoek.

De Kleine Carrousel family farm
At the end of Koebushorst you’ll find De Kleine Carrousel, a family-friendly farm with animals and plenty of activities for children. Besides keeping little ones entertained, it’s also a surprisingly good place for lunch. Open from the end of March until the end of September.

They regularly share photos and upcoming activities on their social media pages, so they’re well worth checking before your visit.

On a warm summer’s day, Leussinkbad is the perfect place to cool off. Please keep in mind that delivery times in the countryside can be a little longer than you might be used to. On busy evenings, delivery times can be longer, so we recommend placing your order in good time.

Discover nature

Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park (Holterberg)
Around a 30-minute drive from the cottage, you’ll find Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. The Holterberg is one of the park’s best-known areas and a wonderful place for walking or cycling. Heathland, forests and beautiful panoramic views make every visit different.

Round off your walk with an artisan ice cream from Buitengewoon Lekker – one of our favourite ways to end a day outdoors.

De Borkeld
Between Holten and Markelo lies the peaceful nature reserve De Borkeld. Heathland, forests, sandy paths and small ponds create a wonderfully varied landscape. It’s one of our own favourite places to enjoy a quiet walk.

Walk part of the Pieterpad
Even if you’re not a long-distance hiker, walking a section of the Pieterpad is well worth it. The route between Holten and Vorden takes you through forests, heathland and open countryside, giving you a taste of one of the Netherlands’ most famous long-distance walking trails.

Gorsselse Heide
A beautiful, peaceful nature reserve with heathland, ponds and lovely walking trails. The perfect place to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Lochemse Berg
If you’re looking for a shorter walk closer to ’t Knusse Bakhuus, Lochemse Berg is an excellent choice. Its gently rolling woodland paths and lovely views make it worth visiting in every season.

Deventer
A lively Hanseatic city on the banks of the River IJssel, where history, culture and atmosphere come together. Even a simple stroll through the historic city centre is well worth your time. While you’re there, don’t miss Walstraat – one of the city’s most charming streets, lined with boutiques, speciality shops and cosy cafés.

Doesburg
A charming fortified town with a beautiful historic centre. It’s a lovely destination to combine with a walk along the River IJssel.

Lochem is a lovely little town, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing drink on a terrace.

When we’re in the mood for coffee or drinks, we often head to Bij de Buurman. Its cosy, living-room atmosphere, homemade cakes and ever-changing dish of the day make it one of our favourite places.

For a relaxed evening meal, we can warmly recommend De Babbelaer.

Finding your way around the kitchen

The kitchen at ’t Knusse Bakhuus may be compact, but it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. In this short guide, we’ll show you the main appliances: the induction hob, oven, fridge with freezer compartment and dishwasher. That way, you’ll quickly know where everything is and be ready to use it.

Good to know

The kitchen at ’t Knusse Bakhuus is mainly designed for preparing a leisurely breakfast, a tasty lunch or a simple evening meal. Whether you’re boiling an egg, heating up some soup or baking something together in the oven, you’ll have everything you need.

As the kitchen doesn’t have an extractor hood, it isn’t ideal for more elaborate cooking. It may be small, but it’s thoughtfully equipped. The stone worktop is durable, but we’d kindly ask you not to place hot pans or baking trays directly on the surface. Please use a potholder instead.

During your stay, why not treat yourself to a relaxing evening out or order in from one of the local restaurants? 😊 You’ll find some of our personal favourites later in this Welcome Guide.

Induction hob

The kitchen at ’t Knusse Bakhuus includes a portable two-burner induction hob. It isn’t kept on the countertop, but stored in the angled cupboard on the far right-hand side of the kitchen.

First, pull out the drawer underneath, then open the cupboard door. The door opens to the left.

Important

To prevent overloading the electrical circuit, please do not use the induction hob at the same time as the dishwasher or the power outlet on the countertop used for the kettle.

How to use the induction hob

1. Unlock the hob by pressing and holding the lock button for 3 seconds.
2. Place a pan on one of the cooking zones.
3. Press the power button.
4. Select the desired heat setting:
   1. Settings 1–3 → Gentle heating or simmering
   1. Settings 4–6 → Regular cooking
   1. Settings 7–9 → Fast cooking or frying
5. When you’ve finished cooking, set the heat level back to 0 and switch the hob off.

Please note: The hob may remain hot for a while after use. Only put it away once it has cooled down completely. The residual heat indicator (H) will disappear when it is safe to store.

Useful features

• The hob has a built-in timer.
• The lock function prevents the settings from being changed accidentally. Press and hold the lock button for 3 seconds to turn it on or off.

A few helpful tips

• The hob heats up quickly, so you’ll often need a lower setting than you might be used to.
• Never heat an empty pan on a high setting.
• Once the hob has cooled down, clean it with a soft cloth. A ceramic hob cleaner (HG) can be found in the top drawer underneath the sink.

Oven

The kitchen also includes an oven – ideal for warm bread rolls in the morning, an easy oven meal or baking something together during your stay.

Below you’ll find the key instructions for easy use.

The oven is operated using the two control knobs and the touchscreen in the centre.

How to use the oven

1. Turn the left-hand knob to select the desired oven function.
2. Use the right-hand knob to set the temperature.
3. Would you like to set a cooking time? Use the timer:
   • Press the clock/timer symbol to select the desired timer setting. (Press it several times to switch between the three timer modes. We usually use the bell symbol with the stop icon underneath.)
   • Use the + and – buttons to set the desired time.
   • Wait a few seconds for the setting to be confirmed automatically.
4. Preheat the oven before you start cooking or baking.
5. Place your dish in the centre of the oven.
6. When you’ve finished, turn both knobs back to the Off position.
7. Please note: the oven will remain hot for some time after use.

Oven accessories

The oven racks, baking trays, potholders, oven gloves and baking paper are stored in the hidden drawer directly underneath the oven.

Open the drawer below the oven. Above the cutlery drawer, you’ll see a wide white panel. Pull the bottom edge of this panel towards you to open the hidden drawer containing the oven accessories.

Tip: Open the drawer from the left-hand side to help avoid trapping your fingers.

Oven functions

• Conventional oven (top & bottom heat) → Ideal for cakes, pies and oven-baked dishes.
• Fan oven → Perfect for bread rolls, croissants and anything that needs to bake evenly.
• Grill → Ideal for giving dishes a crispy, golden-brown finish.
• Pizza setting → Perfect for a crispy base and an evenly cooked topping without drying it out.

Good to know

• The oven, including the outside of the door, can become very hot during use. Potholders are provided.
• Please let the oven cool down after use.
• Would you mind wiping away any crumbs or grease splatters with a damp cloth after use? Thank you.
  

Fridge with freezer compartment

In the kitchen, you’ll find a fridge with a compact freezer compartment. Perfect for storing groceries, breakfast items or an ice cream on a warm day. Good to know

• The fridge may occasionally make a soft humming or clicking sound. That’s perfectly normal.
• The freezer compartment is compact, but large enough for a few frozen items or an ice pack.
• Before you leave, would you mind checking that you haven’t left any food behind? Thank you!

Dishwasher

A dishwasher is, of course, an essential part of a relaxing stay at ’t Knusse Bakhuus.

Below you’ll find the key instructions for easy use.

How to use the dishwasher

1. Remove any large food scraps from plates and pans.
2. Load the dishwasher:
   • Place larger items in the lower rack.
   • Place glasses and cups in the upper rack.
   • Cutlery goes in the cutlery tray at the very top.
   • For the best cleaning results, place large spoons flat on top of the rack.
3. Place a dishwasher tablet in the detergent dispenser and close the lid. Dishwasher tablets are provided in the top drawer underneath the sink.
4. Press the power button to switch on the dishwasher.
5. With the door open, select the desired programme by pressing the programme button until the correct indicator light comes on.
6. Close the door firmly. The programme will start automatically.

Which programme should I use?

• Eco programme → Energy-efficient and suitable for everyday washing.
• Quick programme → Ideal for lightly soiled dishes.
• Intensive programme → Perfect for pots, pans and stubborn food residue.

After use

• At the end of the programme, the dishwasher door will open slightly automatically to help the dishes dry.
• Glasses may still be warm when the programme has finished, so please remove them carefully.
• Would you like to dry the dishes? You’ll find a tea towel hanging in the kitchen, with an extra one in the drawer underneath the sink

Good to know

Only use the detergent intended for dishwashers. You’ll find some in the drawer underneath the sink

Wooden kitchen utensils usually stay in better condition if washed by hand.

Be careful when opening the door, as hot steam may escape.

Bathroom

The bathroom at ’t Knusse Bakhuus includes two washbasins, a toilet, a walk-in shower and a bathtub – perfect for starting your day or unwinding after a day out.

Good to know

• The extractor fan can be switched on using the button next to the light switch outside the bathroom door.
• There’s additional lighting behind the mirror. Simply wave your hand underneath the bottom edge of the mirror to switch it on or off.
• A pull-out squeegee is attached to the bottom of the radiator. After showering, you can use it to sweep any water from the shower screen and floor towards the drain.
• One small tip: the small flush button of the toilet gives a full flush. We don’t quite understand it either, but it’s good to know. 😉

A small favour

The water in this area is quite hard. Would you mind drying the shower, bath and taps with a cloth after use? It really helps to prevent limescale build-up. Thank you!

If you’d like to…

We hope you won’t have to think about cleaning at all during your stay. 😊

But if you’d like to vacuum up a few crumbs or give the cottage a quick tidy, there’s a cordless stick vacuum ready for you.

You’ll find it in the built-in cupboard next to the stairs.

How to use it:

• Remove the cordless stick vacuum from the charging dock.
• Press the power button once to switch the vacuum on. There’s no need to keep the button pressed.
• Need a little extra suction? Press the middle button to switch to a higher power setting.
• When you’re finished, press the power button again to switch the vacuum off.
• Place the cordless stick vacuum back on the charging dock so it’s ready for the next use.

During a longer stay:

If you’re staying a little longer, the dust container may become full. You can easily empty it into the bin and click it back into place afterwards.

Electric vehicle charging

Are you travelling by electric car? You’re welcome to use the charging station at ’t Knusse Bakhuus.

The charging station (11 kW) is located on the street-facing side of the cottage. Simply use your own charge card to start charging. The charging costs will be billed automatically through your charge card.

Rate:
€0.41 per kWh

Good to know:

Please don’t charge an electric vehicle using a regular power socket or an extension lead from the cottage. We kindly ask you to use the charging station instead.

Waste separation

We try to recycle as much of our waste as possible. We’d really appreciate your help with this. 😊

At ’t Knusse Bakhuus, we separate:

• Plastic and cans
• Food waste
• General waste
• Paper
• Glass

Under the sink, you’ll find three bins in the bottom drawer:

• The large bin is for plastic and cans
• The two smaller bins are for food waste and general waste

Good to know

Dolce Gusto coffee pods can be disposed of with the plastic waste.

You can collect paper and glass in the crate to the left of the sideboard.

A small favour

Would you mind giving glass containers a quick rinse before placing them in the crate? Thank you!

If you’d like to dispose of a full rubbish bag during your stay, you’ll find the waste containers to the right of the cottage.

Time to head home?

Before you leave

☐ Turn off the heating.

☐ Empty the fridge and freezer compartment.

☐ Check that all windows and roof windows are closed.

☐ Leave the used towels in the laundry basket in the bathroom.

☐ Put any remaining dirty dishes in the dishwasher and start a cycle.

☐ If you’ve filled a rubbish bag during your stay, please place it in the bin to the right of the cottage. Paper and glass can simply be left in the crate next to the sideboard—we’ll take care of the recycling.

☐ Take one last look around to make sure you haven’t left any personal belongings behind.

☐ Lock the door and return the key to the key safe.
